This book is about popular long distance cross-country ski races. The author Hannes Larsson is a well-known citizen skier: he has achieved 22 Worldloppet Master titles, founded the International Association of Worldloppet Skiers and acted as its president for 9 years. The two first parts of the book are descriptions of Worldloppet races and many other races around the world. Then come two series of chapters on “skiers’ tribulations” (travelling, training, adverse conditions, accidents etc.)and on "close encounters of the first kind" where Hannes tells about many remarkable persons he has met. In these parts the accent is on adventures and anecdotes. Some technical aspects of races (seeding, start arrangements etc.) are described and areas of improvement proposed. Finally, Hannes who speaks seven languages, presents the international language Esperanto. The book is illustrated by 180 colour pictures.
